Atlas LGV Training

HGV training and LGV Provisional Licences

HGV TrainingTo attend a driving course or take a theory test, you must possess a provisional LGV/PCV/HGV licence. This is in addition to your normal car licence even though the details are entered onto the same document. Only holders of full car licences will granted a provisional licence for Class C vehicles and it is necessary to pass a driving test in a Class C vehicle before being allowed to drive a Class C+E vehicle. Your Class C licence can then act as a provisional Class C+E licence.

To obtain your licence you will need to have a vocational licence medical examination which can be organised through your GP or any clinic that conducts this type of medical.

Applicants for a provisional licence must:

  • Be at least 21 years of age (exception is for Class C1 licences at a vehicle weight between 3.5 and 7 tonnes for which the minimum age is 18 years).
  • Be a full car licence holder.
  • Be in possession of the required medical certificate.
  • Have an acceptable driving record.

Atlas, should you require, will make this easy for you we will provide all necessary documentation for licencing and medicals (including a medical appointment) ... call 01709 546544 to find out how easy it can be. You can also fill in the form on the contact page and will get back to you.

Applying for your HGV and LGV driving licence

In order to undertake HGV driver training, lorry driving training and LGV training, we advise that when you will complete the provisional licence application form D2 (enclosed in the introductory pack) in Section 3 "The licence you want", you tick both boxes marked 'C' for LGV under medium/large vehicles and 'D' for passenger carrying vehicles. This will mean that, should you wish at a later date, you are able to train for the other category without having to pay for the medical again. (Atlas send out a full Introductory Pack containing a letter from Atlas outlining our services, a provisional licence application form and a vocational licence Medical Examination Report form.)

If you hold the old style paper licence you will need to send form D2, enclosing also your passport (or birth certificate) along with your current driving licence.

If you hold a valid UK passport you will need to send this with your application, as it is the preferred method of identification. It means that you will not have to complete Section 5 to verify your photograph. It also ensures a speedy return of your provisional licence.

If you do not have a valid UK passport, you can still apply for a photo card licence but you will need to enclose your birth certificate (a photocopy is not acceptable) and you will also need somebody who can countersign the back of your photograph. There is no additional fee for a photo card licence and these are now the only style of licence be issued.

Atlas will be delighted to provide every assistance to our trainees with all aspects of licence application.
